The Most Wonderful Time of the Year?

by Deborah Z Mark

Ever have your wallet stolen?

It’s gut wrenching. You feel miserable. Angry. Violated.

You want to scream at the top of your lungs, “NO! That’s mine!

But more often than not, there’s no one to scream at. Like Santa up the chimney, the thief quickly and quietly slips out of sight before anyone even notices.

And before you know it, he’s using your money to deck his halls.

I know. It happened to me.

On a peaceful Sunday afternoon. At the grocery store. While I was standing next to my mom, looking at greeting cards, my wallet was stolen out of my zipped up purse which was sitting in my shopping cart.

Bah. Humbug.

I’m a careful person. If this can happen to me, it can happen to anyone. And perhaps it has happened to one of your employees – maybe even in your workplace.

What to do first?

What do you do if there is a theft?

  1. Immediately notify security (if available) and call the police to make a police report
  2. Find any witnesses and get their names and contact info
  3. Calm down. Count to 10. You’re no good to anyone when you’re not thinking straight

What to do next

Now comes the fun part.

Replacing e v e r y t h i n g .

There’s your driver’s license, state or school ID. Credit cards. Debit cards. Insurance cards. Not to mention cash. And all the miscellaneous stuff we keep in our wallets: business cards, membership cards, postage stamps, lists, notes.

A word to the wise: make copies of everything in your wallet. It will be much easier to replace those items if your wallet is ever lost or stolen.

I know that’s what I’ll be doing.

More advice

Another bit of advice: offer LegalShield as a benefit to your employees. LegalShield offers an identity theft plan for a low monthly fee for employees, and covers spouses and dependents. Benefits include fraud alert notifications and credit monitoring. And LegalShield gives employees the ability to talk to an attorney about any matter without worrying about high hourly costs.

LegalShield is one of the many benefits managestaff offers you and your employees, in addition to health, dental, vision, life and disability plans.
